The film industry, and many other industries for that matter, are facing new challenges. The corona pandemic has accelerated and challenged society and our ability to conduct business. Within the film industry, the cinema has not only undergone a steel bath, but also had an involuntary pause to rethink, think about how it can be and in what way the business can be conducted post-corona. At Film i Väst, we believe in the cinema as a screening room for the great film where the story is created to be shown on the big white screen. The same stories can of course be consumed on one platform, whenever and wherever you want. What we need now are great ideas for in all genres that attract the audience to go and see Swedish film in cinemas. See you on a biography or platform near you!
At Film i Väst, we conduct extensive external analysis work and during the year we will publish a number of studies and reports on public film funding, its role and task in the new world. Feel free to follow us on Film i Väst or my blog and we will update regularly.
Allows me to re-publish a previous post about our mission. Please enjoy!
Film i Väst has its soul and its heart in the co-production of feature films. It is also in this area that the company has its primary knowledge and expertise, its strong national and international networks. The public and artistic successes, collaborations with mainly the Nordic region’s most exciting, challenging and creative directors and producers have built an internationally well-known and very strong brand.
Film i Väst has always strived to be something more than just a financier. We want to be a contributing party in a number of areas, be it funding structures, creative choices or content – a useful and essential co-producer, not a passive partner. In a world where power structures, conditions and roles change quickly and drastically, Film i Väst must be a guarantee that we, together with producers, creators, distributors and viewers, navigate as correctly as possible.
Film i Väst has since the company expanded its operations to co-finance feature films in 1996/97 seen itself as a Nordic actor with a strong commitment and heart in Swedish film, but also in Danish and Norwegian. Our geographical location explains that choice. Our history in co-productions shows that it was the right choice.
Film i Väst sees drama series as important, not least for creating an industrial industry and reaching audiences, but finds it difficult to see that the company Film i Väst could build the same brand and success if we were mainly financiers of drama series. Film i Väst’s brand, we believe, conceivably enough, is important for building Swedish (and Nordic) design content internationally strong.
The world in which Film i Väst operates is changing at a very fast pace. Old models and reasoning quickly become obsolete. The business models of the future look radically different from today. Power changes face and shape. What place and relevance is there for public film actors in the very near future? The business is facing major challenges.
